MAY I put the facts right about Neil Armstrong and the connection to Langholm. My father, the late Wattie Bell, a keen local historian, was approached by his cousin George Walker of Glasgow about the link to Langholm.
Both their mothers were from the Armstrong family at ‘Commasie' Toon fit. It was his idea when my father first nominated him for the freeman of the Muckle Toon through the then town council, led by Eddie Armstrong. Since his death, autograph prices have tripled in America and can fetch thousands of pounds if connected to historic photos or documentation. After his contract to sign and endorse NASA products to help pay for the landing, he fell out with them and vowed never to sign autographs again exploiting his name.
