Opening date set for Carlisle's new Aldi supermarket

Carlisle's newest superstore will open on September 9.
Budget retailer Aldi announced yesterday its London Road store, on part of the former Cavaghan & Gray bakery, is nearly complete.
Building work will be finished next month, the company said.
The development, being built by Carlisle-based firm Story Construction, will create about 15 full and part-time jobs.
Planning permission for a store on part of the old Cavaghan & Gray bakery site was granted in 2008. But Aldi had stalled work because of a requirement for it to build four light-industrial units for small businesses before the supermarket could be opened.
City councillors last year agreed to lift that condition, although the units must be finished within three years of the store’s opening.
Aldi had argued there was no demand for the units in a recession, making the scheme as it stood unviable.
The store will be have 10,600sq ft of floorspace.
Aldi will pay for a mini-roundabout in Petteril Bank Road at the supermarket entrance. It will also contribute £31,970 towards improvements at the London Road/Eastern Way junction.
The Cavaghan & Gray bakery closed in 2005 with the loss of 680 jobs. The rest of the site is being developed as a housing estate by Barratt Homes.
