GUY Fawkes night went off as usual in November 1987 with a bang and a very large crowd gathered on a grand night to see the Rev James Watson light one of the biggest bonfires seen on the Kilngreen for some years.

Should bonfires be lit a day early?
On the evening of the 28th ult. a public meeting was held in Midknock, parish of Westerkirk, for the purpose of forming a Temperance Association.A report dealing with 26 cases of bad attendance was submitted and dealt with. Several applications for exemption from attendance were considered.Youngsters in the town are in a dilemma, we understand, in regard to the Guy Fawkes celebrations this year.This year the Langholm Operatic and Dramatic Society are performing one of the best of Ben Travers’ series of farces.

Did Burns really visit Langholm?
On the evening of Wednesday last, between thirty and forty of the operatives of Langholm Woollen Mills met in the Commercial Inn, for the purpose of presenting Mr John J. Moffat, clerk, on the occasion of his leaving Langholm for Dumfries, with a writing desk, as a recognition of the unqualified respect and esteem with which they individually regarded him.This match was played at Langholm on Saturday.A local tradition has it that Burns once visited Langholm while he was an Excise Officer and that he visited the Toll-bars and some “dram shops” in the Muckle Toon.Children from Langholm Nursery Group will be linking together with over half a million children in Playgroups on November 3rd for a Silver Jubilee celebration.

Bell fell with large part of Auld Kirk
WITH a view of aiding the funds of the Parish Library, the committee of management requested the Rev. James Cochrane, M.A., Minister of Cupar, Fife, temporarily resident in this neighbourhood to give a lecture.THE annual meeting of this club was held in the Crown Hotel, on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr R. M’George, in the chair.AFTER 13 years Langholm people will have an opportunity of seeing the Auld Kirk Bell which has lain in the Town Council store at the top of the Gas Entry ever since it fell along with a large portion of the gable of the Auld Kirk up the Kirk Wynd on the night of 8th February 1948.AN ‘Open Night’ was held at Langholm Fire Station last night and the men had really gone out of their way to emphasise the fire safety theme and to explain and demonstrate the equipment they are unfortunately called on to use too often.

Floods made bridge quiver!
On Saturday evening last, George Shearer, a platelayer, and Robert Strickland, a navvie, both residing at Byreburnfoot, Canonbie, went into the kitchen of Brockwoodlees when under the influence of drink, and alarmed the inmates by their coarse language and other unseemly conduct.On Thursday the members of the choir of the Episcopal Chapel at Langholm were treated by the Duchess of Buccleuch to a most enjoyable trip to Glasgow Exhibition.Ever since Mrs Alex. Pool’s comment regarding the building of the Langholm Bridge, made on the “Have a go” programme last week there has been considerable discussion going on in the town on the subject and so we mention the late Mr. John Hyslop’s words about the Langholm Bridge as contained in his book about Langholm As It Was.In a setting unrivalled by any other, in a frame of changing colour, the 138th annual Eskdale Agricultural Society’s Show was held on the Castleholm on Saturday.

Dancing keeps bowls rolling
The Carlisle Journal reports that on Sunday night between ten o’clock and midnight, and with little inter-mission till two on Monday morning, rain fell in that neighbourhood with a heaviness unparalleled in the memory of the oldest men.Langholm Old Club – A special meeting of the members was held on Monday week, Mr Thomas Paisley presiding, when it was announced that there was a deficit of £5 9s 1d, and after consideration, it was unanimously resolved to have a concert and dance with the view of wiping out the adverse balance.The late harvest has only slightly affected stock entries for Saturday’s Show on the Castleholm, and once again sheep entries will predominate.Mrs E. McInnes, President, welcomed members to the start of the new season. The business part of the meeting ensued followed by the presentation to Mrs E. Dinwoodie of the perpetual silver cake stand trophy for the most competition points acquired during the last year.

Teens show their muscle at the disco
On Monday, the 2nd inst, Jane M’Donald, a child about two years and five months old, daughter of John M’Donald, carter, Gaulsbridge, Middlebie, died under the following circumstances.The harvest Thanksgiving services at Bewcastle were commenced on Friday and continued the following Sunday. Never had these places of worship been more tastefully decorated than on this occasion, and the judgment, with which the flowers had been arranged was greatly admired.Ewes W.R.I. held their first monthly meeting after the summer session on Thursday evening of last week. Mrs. Elliot presided.Langholm Youth Club’s disco dancers reaped the awards of hard work and dedication last weekend when they won both the senior and junior superdance titles at the S.A.Y.E Regional Championships held in Castle Douglas.

One lady leaping in the competition
The anniversary entertainment to scholars attending the Sunday schools in Nichol Forest came off with great eclat at Kingfield House on Wednesday the 28th ultimo.This popular exhibition of farm stock, etc, which attracts a big entry from the counties of Dumfries, Roxburgh and Cumberland, takes place in Langholm on Saturday first. The entries are considerably in advance of last year. The first meeting of Gilnockie W.R.I. after the summer recess was held in Gilnockie Hall on Thursday, 14th September, when the new president, Mrs. Grant, presided over a good attendance of members.A sunny afternoon and music by Langholm Town Band were added attractions to the Bring and Buy Sale and Afternoon Tea held in the Scott Hay Gallery and charmingly opened by Dr J. C. Anderson who was presented with a basket of flowers. £213 was raised for the National Society for Cancer Relief.
