Our Colts ‘setting the heather on fire’
Mr George Greer, Agent of the Scottish Temperance League, lectured in the Parish Schoolroom on Thursday evening, the 27th ult.A meeting of committee was held in the Temperance Hotel on Friday evening - Mr Bell, Hillside, convener presiding.We are referring to the Langholm Colts who have certainly been “setting the heather on fire” not only in Langholm but throughout the Borders by reason of their brilliant play.A great deal of concern was expressed by residents both young and old when the old beech trees along Beechy Plains had to be cut down because they had become a danger.

The Langholm landing
EXACTLY 30 years ago the Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser reported on the visit to Langholm four days earlier of astronaut Neil Armstrong who became the first and only Freeman of the burgh. We reproduce some extracts of what happened in the Muckle Toon three years after he’d made history by becoming the first man to step foot on the moon in 1969 with his famous words: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Fond memories of the ‘meeting’ bridge
The Eskdale & Liddesdale annual ploughing match, open to all, took part on the farm of Parkhouse yesterday.There have been three fires in Langholm during the last two days, two of them occurring on Monday night, and the other in the early hours of yesterday (Tuesday) morning.We happened to be present when one of our older readers was telling a story about a ploy he took part in many years ago, and when he said the muster point of his “gang” was the Wud Brig he was immediately questioned as to its whereabouts.Local youth worker Denis R. Male received a tribute to his unstinting service to youth work in Langholm when he was presented at Gatehouse-of-Fleet with a certificate.
