MP steps in to save jobs in dairy talks
In recording the brave efforts made by the boy John Williams to save another boy from drowning in the old harbour (in our impression of the 6th instant), we expressed a hope that the notice would draw the attention of the Humane Society to the case. We have now great pleasure in stating that the Earl of Aberdeen forwarded last week £5 to the Rev. Mr Briscoe, at Holyhead as a reward to the boy. That gentleman very wisely expended the sum in purchasing a beautiful silver watch, with the following inscription neatly engraved on the case “The Earl of Aberdeen to John Williams, who bravely strove to save another boy from drowning. Holyhead, September 1, 1862”On Saturday fire broke out on the farm of Broadchapel, about a mile and a half from the burgh of Lochmaben. When the outbreak was discovered the fire had got a firm hold of a large shed which contained a large quantity of unthrashed corn and hay. The shed and its contents were destroyed, but the adjoining buildings were saved. The damage is roughly estimated at £500. The farm is tenanted by the proprietor, Mr William Crawford.Last week and this week our advertisement columns announce the setting up of the Canonbie Trust.A strong call from The European Commission to use its management powers to make sure that dairies in the South of Scotland were not starved of milk supplies has been made in the European Parliament by South of Scotland Euro MP, Alasdair Hutton.

Flying saucers spotted in sky
On Tuesday week last when the 5.30 pm train had arrived at the railway station, on its way north, a man was about to step into one of the carriages at the moment of the train starting, when, unfortunately, his foot slipped and he fell between the platform and the carriage. Colonel Seely, MP Secretary of State for War, addressed a meeting at Dumfries. Yes, we have heard from one or two of our readers that flying saucers have been seen in the area and we have heard this confirmed via The Cumberland News. The EC Directive relating to the quality of water intended for human consumption has been given a lot of consideration by the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council officials.

Flying Matt’s flag for common riding
A short time ago an individual in the neighbourhood of Newcastleton, who is not a most dexterous disciple of Isaac Walton in that village, felt a ravenous desire for a dish of trouts, and, collecting two or three rough rods, he had them mounted with lines and hooks, which were temptingly baited with worms.
