Last Saturday being pay-day on the railway a number of the navvies were drinking at the Cross Keys, when a quarrel took place between some of them and some colliers, who were there drinking also.

£19 to help Carlisle
On Tuesday 6th inst., a concert was given in the Parish School-room, here, in aid of the Carlisle Relief fund. The room was handsomely decorated with flags, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Thomson of Liverpool, and, as on the previous occasion, the house was again a bumper, being crowded by a respectable audience.The annual soiree of this church was held on Monday evening. Rev. Geo. Orr presided over a large attendance.An appeal to all ex-servicemen and women in Langholm to support the local branch of the British Legion was made by Mr. W. Cuthbertson, Eskdaill Street, chairman of the branch, at its annual general meeting, which was held on Thursday evening.A packed room enjoyed a very convivial ‘Night wi’ Burns’ at the Eskdale Burns Club’s Annual Burns Supper held in the Eskdale Hotel on Friday night. With speakers and singers on top form, deserved applause was frequent throughout the evening.

Life without drink
On the evening of Tuesday, the 11th ult., Mr Beattie lectured in the Free church. It being the evening of the fast day, there was a more than ordinary attendance.A special meeting of this Society was held in the Crown Hotel, Langholm on Wednesday – Mr T. Gaskell, presiding.There was a good attendance of members at the annual Burns Night which was held last Wednesday evening.The disputed application to plant forestry on 480.6 hectares of land at Gorrenberry, near Hermitage, Newcastleton is now to go to the Forestry Commission’s Regional Advisory Committee to try and find a settlement.

We understand that, at the suggestion of the Government Inspector of Schools, it has been resolved to open evening classes in the Parish School for the benefit of youths of both sexes who are employed in the public works or otherwise engaged during the day.
