Floods made bridge quiver!
On Saturday evening last, George Shearer, a platelayer, and Robert Strickland, a navvie, both residing at Byreburnfoot, Canonbie, went into the kitchen of Brockwoodlees when under the influence of drink, and alarmed the inmates by their coarse language and other unseemly conduct. On Thursday the members of the choir of the Episcopal Chapel at Langholm were treated by the Duchess of Buccleuch to a most enjoyable trip to Glasgow Exhibition.Ever since Mrs Alex. Pool’s comment regarding the building of the Langholm Bridge, made on the “Have a go” programme last week there has been considerable discussion going on in the town on the subject and so we mention the late Mr. John Hyslop’s words about the Langholm Bridge as contained in his book about Langholm As It Was.In a setting unrivalled by any other, in a frame of changing colour, the 138th annual Eskdale Agricultural Society’s Show was held on the Castleholm on Saturday.

McInnes, President, welcomed members to the start of the new season. The business part of the meeting ensued followed by the presentation to Mrs E. Lodge match thrills the excited crowd
Mr George Johnstone and a select party have been enjoying the sport of grouse shooting at Westerhall, the seat of Mr Johnstone’s brother Sir Frederick Johnstone, who is at present travelling in America. This match was played on Langholm Lodge ground on Saturday. The Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, Countess of Dalkeith, Lady Margaret Scott, Lady Herbert Scott, Mr Johnstone Douglas, Comlongon Castle, Mr W.F. Forbes, and Mr and Mrs Milne Home witnessed the match. The Earl of Dalkeith entertained the teams to lunch. Langholm Lodge batted first, and although only a moderate total had been put on, namely, 45, at the fall of the seventh wicket, some splendid hitting by Lord Henry Scott and Hon. G. Herbert quickly set up a good score. On Friday afternoon Mr. William Anderson, who retired the previous week after 35 years service with the Post Office at Eskdalemuir, was presented with the Imperial Service Medal for meritorious service. The Creche at Langholm Community Centre may be opened once again in the very near future following representations made by Dumfriesshire MP, Sir Hector Monro to the Manpower Services Commission who finance the scheme.

Nasty accident as man goes under rail wagon
On Saturday last, about 11 o’clock a.m., another accident occurred on the Langholm Branch of the Border Union Railway. With orders for spring goods still coming well to hand, the tweed trade of the Border district continues active, and the looms are being kept full running. There was a good contingent of Langholmites present at Canonbie Flower Show on Saturday, and we were approached by dozens of fathers and mothers, all of whom voiced the same complaint.Adverse weather conditions over the past few months reflected the entries at Langholm Horticultural Show on Saturday, particularly in the cut flower section where Coulthard Barnfather really showed his gardening prowess to clean up the trophies.

Westerhall estate goes under hammer for £80k
This exhibition was held on the 27th ult., in a tent, kindly erected for the occasion in front of Burnfoot house by the owner Captain Malcolm, where there was a goodly display of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, the whole of which bore testimony to the care bestowed on them by the competitors. In the auction room on Thursday, at Messers Knight, Frank & Rutley’s, Hanover Square, London, the historic estate of Westerhall, embracing 11,282 acres, was brought to the hammer. The shows were well patronised on the Kilngreen and this year there appeared to be more stalls than ever, even though some familiar faces amongst the showpeople were absent.Depriving elderly people of what would seem to be a simple but essential service does not sound good at any time but when the people concerned are out of town and in a rural community without public transport then it becomes very much worse.
