A winter storm blows into town
Mr Charles Brook, of Kinmount, Master of the Dumfriesshire Hounds, met with an accident on Saturday during a run with the pack.We are in complete agreement with the meteorologists in their opinion that last weekend was one of the worst pre-Christmas storms we have had for some time. And didn’t it come on sudden?Despite being a listed building and despite being in a Conservation Area, the small coach-house adjoining Greenbank is to be demolished to allow the development of sheltered housing now in progress.

Did Burns really visit Langholm?
On the evening of Wednesday last, between thirty and forty of the operatives of Langholm Woollen Mills met in the Commercial Inn, for the purpose of presenting Mr John J. Moffat, clerk, on the occasion of his leaving Langholm for Dumfries, with a writing desk, as a recognition of the unqualified respect and esteem with which they individually regarded him. This match was played at Langholm on Saturday.A local tradition has it that Burns once visited Langholm while he was an Excise Officer and that he visited the Toll-bars and some “dram shops” in the Muckle Toon.Children from Langholm Nursery Group will be linking together with over half a million children in Playgroups on November 3rd for a Silver Jubilee celebration.

Bell fell with large part of Auld Kirk
WITH a view of aiding the funds of the Parish Library, the committee of management requested the Rev. James Cochrane, M.A., Minister of Cupar, Fife, temporarily resident in this neighbourhood to give a lecture.THE annual meeting of this club was held in the Crown Hotel, on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr R. M’George, in the chair.AFTER 13 years Langholm people will have an opportunity of seeing the Auld Kirk Bell which has lain in the Town Council store at the top of the Gas Entry ever since it fell along with a large portion of the gable of the Auld Kirk up the Kirk Wynd on the night of 8th February 1948.AN ‘Open Night’ was held at Langholm Fire Station last night and the men had really gone out of their way to emphasise the fire safety theme and to explain and demonstrate the equipment they are unfortunately called on to use too often.
