Family’s home is gutted by blaze

mblangholm1 We are happy in being able to state that this corps has received a large addition to its strength. A notice was given in our two last numbers that a new squad was about to be formed. On Friday night a largely attended social meeting in connection with Langholm Parish Church Choir was held in the Buccleuch Hall, at which two beautiful silver vases were presented to Mr C.E. Metcalfe, the organist of the church, and his wife, on the occasion of the celebration of their silver wedding. The dwelling house in George Street, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Klasinski and family, was almost completely gutted as a result of an outbreak of fire which was first detected late on Friday night. On Sunday, January 25th, the congregation of Canonbie and Chapelknowe United Free Churches made a farewell presentation to Dr and Mrs W. Speirs who are retiring to live at Innerleithen.

Mill stalwart clocks up half a century

mbmills On Monday week, William Young, carter, Langholm, fell from the top of his cart in the Sandbed, Hawick. His head struck the pavement and he was taken up insensible and removed to the house of Dr McLeod, who on examination found that Young had received a severe scalp wound which was dressed. How town’s water changed its course

sm hooley His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch has, with his wonted liberality, given the poor of his parish a most seasonable donation of 20 tons of coal from his coal-field in Canonbie, and the farmers and others in the parish having horses and carts, are leading the coals free of expense to the houses of the recipients; thus many a fireside has been rendered more than usually warm and cheerful during this cold and frosty Christmas and New Year. Before Sheriff Champion in Dumfries Sheriff Court on Tuesday, George Mackenzie, a middle-aged man, and Robert M’Adam (23) were charged with having on December 11 and 13 broken into a shop at Claygate, Canonbie, occupied by John Horsburgh, draper and licensed grocer, and stolen a number of articles, including 10s in cash, two bottles of rum, a quart bottle of whisky, two half-bottles of whisky, and two overcoats. It is exactly a hundred and ten years ago since the former Langholm Waterworks were opened, the last remaining evidence of which are two small reservoirs situated at Mount Hooley. The atrocious weather conditions which have swept the whole country for the last few days have not bypassed Annandale & Eskdale.

Curlers ready to meet any challenge

dc parishschool12 The annual general meeting of the Eskdalemuir curling club was held lately in the parish school for the purpose of electing office bearers, revising rinks, and making the necessary arrangements for their old friend, John Frost. On Wednesday night when Mr Glendinning, Evertown, was driving Mr. Elliot, Bogrie, from Tarcoon towards Ladyhousesteads, the pony became restive and bolted, overturning the digby and pitching both occupants out.A sum of money amounting to between £20 and £30 was stolen from the Langholm British Legion at the weekend.A very popular young Langholm doctor is “very ill but stable” in the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle after the car she was driving was involved in a nasty accident on the A7 Canonbie bypass, near Auchenrivock, on Monday evening about 7.15 p.m.

A winter storm blows into town

sm oldlangholm Mr Charles Brook, of Kinmount, Master of the Dumfriesshire Hounds, met with an accident on Saturday during a run with the pack.We are in complete agreement with the meteorologists in their opinion that last weekend was one of the worst pre-Christmas storms we have had for some time. And didn’t it come on sudden?Despite being a listed building and despite being in a Conservation Area, the small coach-house adjoining Greenbank is to be demolished to allow the development of sheltered housing now in progress.
