Michael guesses to win sponsored run
About two months ago a number of working men in the town formed themselves into a committee to solicit subscriptions for the purpose of presenting Mr William Anderson, the respected teacher of the Langholm Instrumental Band, with some mark of their appreciation of his unremitting and unwearied services in teaching the band, and bringing it to the high standard of perfection to which it has now attained. The annual presentation of prizes to the pupils of Langholm Academy took place on Friday afternoon in presence of members of the School Board, and a large number of ladies and gentlemen.Langholm’s international wing threequarter, Christie Elliot, has been selected to play on the wing for “The Rest” in the final trial which will be played at Murrayfield on Saturday when “The Possibles” threequarter line will face the entire London Scottish quartette. The selectors have made a great re-shuffle of “The Rest” back division and for the first time Hawick’s most capped back, George Stevenson, will play on the opposite wing partnered by his club mate Broatch.Even though the rain lashed down on Boxing Day morning, it failed to dampen the spirits of a brave few spectators who turned out to watch the sponsored run in aid of Gread Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children organised by Ken Murray, from George St.

On Wednesday afternoon last, when the 3 o’clock train was returning from the north, within a mile-and-a-half of New-Castleton, a plate-layer, of the name of Johnston, and his men, who were working along with him, had lifted a rail on the top of a high embankment in order to raise the rail to its proper level.
