150 YEARS SOIREE AND BALL AT MESSRS REID & TAYLOR’S WORKS. On Monday evening last, this soiree and ball took place in that large wool store recently erected by this most enterprising firm.

Dashing to put out the flames at bakery fire
About three o’clock on the morning of Sunday the 25th ult., the bakehouse in Wapping Lane belonging to Mr William Hyslop, baker here, was discovered to be on fire.On Friday evening the annual dinner and concert of this society was held in the Buck Hotel. Some fifty gentlemen sat down to dinner under the chairmanship of councillor Montgomery, the croupiers being Messrs R. M’Cullock and J. W. Goodfellow.On Sunday, 18th December, the children of the Sunday School led the evening service, enacting the Christmas story.On Sunday morning at Langholm Parish Church the traditional message of Christmas came shining through when the children of the Sunday School performed their annual nativity play.

100 years of children meeting Santa Claus
At the close of the half-yearly meeting of the Working Men’s Bowling club held some weeks ago, the subject of a news room was taken up by the members, and a committee was formed to look out for a suitable room and to obtain members.On Saturday evening week the Ewes children were entertained to their annual treat which is now regarded by the children and mothers as the most enjoyable evening in the year.Much regret was occasioned in Langholm and Eskdale, especially in agricultural circles, when the news was received of the death, which took place in the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, on Thursday, of Mr Andrew Graham, Eskdaill Street, Langholm.The Academy Hall rocked with laughter on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night when Langholm Community Players presented “Robinson Crusoe” in good old fashioned panto style.

Memorial will make next generation proud
A numerously attended public meeting was held in the Parish Church here, on the evening of Wednesday the 12th inst., W. E. Malcolm, Esq. of Burnfoot in the Chair. The Rev. J. W. Macturk opened the meeting with prayer.Since the polling commenced throughout the country Langholm has taken no small interest in this General Election.INSPECTOR AT ANNAN“People often take some time to get used to something like the MacDiarmid Memorial but the next generation may well be proud of it.”

Curlers have the edge over the competition
The General Meeting of Eskdalemuir Curling club was held in the parish Schoolroom on Monday the 12th ult., when WM. Hunter, Esq, Feddling, was elected president, James Beattie, Esq., Davington, Clerk and treasurer.During the past week a number of meetings in support of both candidates in Dumfriesshire Election have been held in Langholm, at which eminent speakers have been engaged.Two rinks representing the Eskdale Curling club beat Caerlaverock Dumfries in a first-round tie of the Mansfield Trophy competition which was played last week.A stretch of the former A7 trunk road now the B720 between Gilnockie Bridge and Canonbie via Byreburnfoot, is to be closed permanently following a consultants’ report considered by the Dumfries and Galloway Region’s Roads and Transportation committee yesterday.

Popular Langholm baker collapsed at his counter
THE anniversary of the Duke of Buccleuch’s birth-day was celebrated here on the 26th ult., by a dinner at the Crown Hotel.MR ROBERT Taylor, 61 years of age, who conducted a baker’s business at 78 High Street, Langholm, and who also carried on the joint business of confectioner and tobacconist along with his son at 98 High Street dropped down dead suddenly in the latter shop about half-past seven on Tuesday evening.WINNERS of the pairs tournament promoted by Eskdalemuuir Carpet Bowling Club which was held in the Ex-Servicemen’s Public Hall on Saturday were: 1st, A. Taylor and J. Davidson, Hutton; 2nd, J. Dalgliesh and R. Young, Eskdalemuir; 3rd, P. Bell and G Henry, Eskdalemuir; 4th W. Murray and B. Saunders, Beattock.LOCAL carpet bowlers were to the fore last weekend when Ewes carpet bowlers held their pairs tournament on the Saturday followed by a single-hand competition on the Monday night.

Weighing up the cost of extending rail links
The following letter we extract from the Annan Observer of the 15th instant:–A very successful concert under the auspices of Canonbie Curling club was held in Canonbie School, on Friday evening.Once again the country is in the throes of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease which must be one of the worst in history. Tenant farmers on the Duke of Buccleuch estates in the Border countryhave been given a boost by their landlord in an effort to help them overcome the problems brought by the bad summer.

Cash in the banks while the duels are on streets
