Mr Eden, one of the Commissioners under the Salmon Fisheries Act, was present.A very pleasant evening was spent at E Sington in Cleveland recently, when the tenants and workmen on Lady Palmer’s Grinkle Estate, met and presented Mr Armstrong with a gold watch, and Mrs Armstrong with a gold and diamond brooch, and to wish them god Speed on their leaving for New Zealand. The monthly meeting of Eskdalemuir W.R.I. was held on the evening of Wednesday last.If successful in next week’s District council elections, newcomer to the hustings, Denis Male, says his job will be to make sure “that Langholm and Westerkirk’s voice is properly understood and reasonably argued in the District Council offices”.

Praise for pupils
THE annual examination of this school by a committee of Presbytery, took place on Tuesday week last, in presence of a large assemblage of visitors from town and country. An interesting football match, under Association rules, was played at Bentpath on Saturday last between Bentpath Rangers and Langholm Nomads, the latter being more accustomed to the Rugby game.It was one of our readers who drew our attention to the fact that while most of our sports and recreations in Langholm and elsewhere have been invaded by women there is one which the fair sex has left alone and that is angling. It is a far cry from Thomas Telford’s humble birthplace in the lonely hills of Eskdale to the hub of industrial development of Telford, the area in Shropshire which bears the name of the man who earned himself the title of “father of civil engineering”.

Tributes to Toon stalwart Mr Smellie
The demonstration on the 10th passed off here with a public dinner at the Crosskey’s Inn, and notwithstanding that large numbers went to witness the superior displays at Carlisle and Langholm, about thirty-four of the inhabitants of Canonbie sat down at five o’clock in the afternoon to a substantial feast, prepared in a style which reflected great credit on Mr and Mrs Elder. The chair was occupied by Mr John Burgess, and Mr David Johnstone acted as croupier.Langholm’s oldest inhabitant lived under six sovereigns.Langholm registered their second win on successive Saturdays when they defeated Boroughmuir F.P. by three points to nil.The proposed upgrading of the A7 between Auchenrivock and Ashysike which will eventually cost an estimated £850,000, has been given a low priority rating by the SDD who have not as yet issued an invitation to prepare a scheme. On the other hand, the Eweslees improvement on the A7 is all set to go to tender – when the £580,000 estimated cost of the scheme can be found.
