WE look back this week to May 1987 when Robert Rae was elected Langholm Cornet.
Robert Rae was elected Cornet in May 1987
Robert Rae and Andrew Johnstone were the only two who stood for election that year. Robert won the election with 636 votes compared with Andrew’s 437.
Robert John Rae was a 22-year-old plumber who lived in Henry Street at the time and worked for Tuddenham’s of Longtown. His grandfather Robert Rae was elected Cornet in 1913. Robert was the only son of the late Jean and Leslie Rae.
