He said it had been taken at Eskdalemuir smiddy by a passenger on Joe Bell's bus.

John said: "Joe brought the mail up in the morning and came back for the outgoing mail in the afternoon. The mail was delivered in the parish by local men and women on cycles and on foot because there were no roads to the herds' houses then."
