Down Memory Lane

DOES anyone know what this was about? It is obviously Langholm Pipe Band receiving a cheque from the owners of the Crown Hotel. There are some quite young band members and we think it was about 20 years ago.

Last week’s photo of Canonbie church drama club was of A Lady Mislaid, from February 1954. A different photo appeared in the March 3 paper, while a review appeared on February 24.

It was a two-act comedy directed by Mr Maynard of Canonbie, with special praise going to both the carpenter and electrician, P Laidlaw and I Davidson, ‘whose setting of the stage was all that could be desired’.

It centres on two unmarried sisters living in an isolated country cottage and the whereabouts of the lady mislaid.

From left to right, seated, is Jean Nichol; Ian Carruthers, an ambitious detective inspector; Margaret Maynard, who played Jennifer; Betty Irvine (née Carruthers) who played one sister, Ester; Ken Maynard, who played George, Jennifer’s fiancé; Eric Dunmore, a visitor who gets more than he bargained for when accused of murder; Ann Burns, who mysteriously appears; Winifred Dunmore who played daily help Mrs Small; and Ella Glendinning who played the other sister, Esther.

Only Ann and Eric are still alive and Eric is now 93.
