Warning on bogus workmen

POLICE in the Borders are reminding people to be aware after reports of possible bogus workmen and cold callers who may be operating in the region.

In recent incidents an unknown man cold-called people claiming to be an engineer from Dyson. He offered to do a service on the individual’s vacuum cleaner and suggested an appointment time for the next day.

Subsequent checks with Dyson showed the company does not offer the public such a service.

A police spokesman said: “I would encourage people receiving unsolicited phone calls, irrespective of the nature, to terminate the call politely. We would certainly discourage people from entering any form of negotiations with these individuals. On this occasion, the woman did the correct thing and alerted the police.

“I would encourage anyone with with concerns about bogus workmen, no matter how trivial they seem, to contact the police for advice.”

Ring 0131 3113131 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
