I AM a former Hawick High School pupil with a background in the textile industry and now work for a Kelso-based water services firm.
Like many people in Hawick, I understand the problems of moving on after being made redundant in the textile industry. I went to university after working for 17 years as a dyer.
One of my key concerns is the availability of retraining and education for adults who increasingly find they need to make career changes through their working lives.
Services need to be provided and access to higher education made easier for people with families to support.
I believe that using the talents of Hawick people will be the key to building a sustainable economic future for the town, ensuring its future prosperity and, more importantly, improving our quality of life. This involves encouraging the sustainable organic growth of indigenous small commercial businesses and developing social enterprises run and owned by the community to meet its needs.
I am particularly interested in sustainable solutions to the flooding threat in Hawick and communities downstream.
