ON Saturday, June 2, the Langholm Concert Orchestra, under their conductor Arthur Tolson, got the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Langholm off to a fine musical start.
The first item on the programme was an inspired choice, The Crown Imperial by William Walton who had been Master of the Queen’s music.
The audience was treated to a magnificent programme which featured composers such as Handel, who made his home in England, and other outstanding British composers such as Elgar, Parry, Benjamin Britten and Vaughan Williams.
The vocal soloists were Glen Cavers and Hannah Cumming. Glen chose Scots songs, while Hannah gave us Gilbert & Sullivan and a Scottish song.
Both Northumberland pipes and bagpipes also featured. Langholm Sings, the new community choir, made their first public appearance at the concert. Well done to them.
Music for the Royal Fireworks was accompanied by a visual presentation of the fireworks concert in Edinburgh. This was down to Walter in his lighting control box.
The whole concert was much appreciated by the audience.
