God made humans to be happy

THERE is a strong strain of misery in some forms of Christianity. One of the desert fathers was irritated to see a group of young men walking by, happily laughing, and he shouted out, ‘We must face the last judgment and you laugh!’

Baroness Armstrong of Hill Top, a former Labour Chief Whip and a Christian, said recently that ‘we weren’t put on earth to enjoy ourselves’. In fact, there are some Christian traditions that appear to make a virtue of being miserable.
