IT’S the end of an era today when Jim Rowan, sub postmaster at Newcastleton Post Office, retires.
The Post Office has been run by Mr Rowan’s family since 1954 and during that time has dealt with thousands of parcels and letters.
Mr Rowan and his wife Moira have run the post office since 1987 but have helped Mr Rowan’s mother since 1974.
Mr Rowan, 66, said: “There have been lots of changes in my time at the Post Office. Technology is probably the main one and we do so many other things now asides from letters and parcels.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I will miss the customers coming in and having a chat across the counter. I will miss the contact but I will see them out and about.”
Mr Rowan’s wife Moira, who works part-time in the Post Office, is also retiring.
Mr Rowan said: “We will have to get used to a whole new routine. We like walking so we’ll be doing a bit of that to keep fit and looking after our grandchildren.”
Mr Rowan was going out for lunch with friends today to mark the occasion. The Post Office is currently interviewing candidates to take over.
