Children take to the hills to plant a wood

PUPILS from P4 to P7 at Newcastleton and P7 at Langholm planted 200 oak and birch trees at Gorrenberry Farm in the Hermitage Valley last Tuesday.

Staff of UPM Tilhill, forest managers and the Woodland Trust organised the event and helped the children as they wielded spades enthusiastically, unfazed by the cold and windy weather. Gorrenberry Jubilee Wood, will stretch across 909 acres (368 hectares) of rough grassland, helping to increase native woodland cover in the Borders.
