NINE candidates are lining up to contest the four seats in the Annandale East and Eskdale ward in the Dumfries and Galloway council election next Thursday.

The ward includes not only Langholm, Eskdalemuir and Canonbie but also Kirkpatrick Fleming, Gretna, Ecclefechan and Eaglesfield. There are 13 wards in total in Dumfries and Galloway and 47 councillors.

At Scottish Borders council the Hawick and Hermitage ward, which takes in Newcastleton, has attracted seven candidates, including the three existing councillors.
