THE Langholm regeneration group is working in partnership with a sponsor to run a Shop Local campaign this festive season.

Billy Young, group chairman, told Langholm, Ewes and Westerkirk community council that the scheme was being sponsored by Niall and Elspeth Weatherstone.

There would be a loyalty card for shoppers to use. The card would be stamped by the shopkeeper and after five purchases, the card would be entered into a prize draw.

Mr Young said the Weatherstones were putting up a £100 cash prize, with the second prize a large hamper and the third a small hamper. All the businesses needed to do was to supply an item for the hampers.

He said: "The Weatherstones are very enthusiastic and the scheme has been well thought out by them."

Next Monday the group would be hosting a demonstration of a Shopwatch scheme by the police in Latimers of Langholm.

He said: "It is a way of communicating with each other very quickly to warn people about anything suspicious going on. It's for all business owners whether shops, hotels or other businesses. It's not for the public."
