Residents out on force for Cornet's street party

ONE of the highlights of the Langholm Common Riding is the Cornet's street party.

This year all paths led to Townfoot where Stuart Murray lives with his parents Les and Gillian and sister, Shonagh.

Stuart, a politics student, was joined by his right and left-hand men Simon Tweddle and Jamie Fletcher. Also attending were the semi-jubilee Cornet Stephen Rae and the jubilee Cornet Colin Barnfather.

Every resident of Townfoot was invited and there was a great turn-out to enjoy the get-together and listen to the music.

The party was organised by Lynne Aitken and Angela Cropper who organised a very tasty spread and a cake, which was baked by Eleanor McMurdo, was cut by the Cornet.

His neighbours presented him with a bottle of wy, while Les was given a bottle of wine and Gillian a bouquet of flowers. Stuart will also receive a collage of photos of his time as Cornet which will be put together after the Common Riding.

Stuart Fletcher made a decorative banner in the colours of purple, pink and white to present to Stuart.

The pipe band played a few sets and the town band ran through some Common Riding tunes to get everyone in the mood for the last Friday in July.

Les said: Lynne and Angela organised it all. We just walked out the door. It was quite overwhelming. A lot of people were there."
