Initiative offers fundraising support

ORGANISATIONS and groups in Langholm and Eskdale looking for fundraising and project development support can go to the Langholm Initiative for help.

The Langholm Initiative have had a dedicated community engagement worker since April and he has been working on various projects around the town.

Jason Railton has worked with a variety of groups such as the Langholm day centre, Langholm parish church and Langholm and district rail group.

The community support has been important in delivering on key objectives for the future of the town.

Jason said: “It’s important that these groups are supported fully so they can continue to operate and offer different opportunities to people living here.

"We want to expand the number of groups we currently work with, and see what we can offer them.”

The last six months have been very successful and different groups have praised the support they have received.

Jason added: “So far, we have secured thousands of pounds in funding for groups in Langholm and this will have a positive knock-on effect for jobs and service provision in the town.

“Looking at funding applications and the work they require can be quite daunting sometimes and, understandably, people don’t have the time in their full work schedules to do that.

“Many management committees will be entirely voluntary and this can mean they don’t have adequate time to dedicate to the task.

“We have a proven track record of securing funding with attractive proposals and my flexibility means that I can fit around the groups schedules as and when.”

Third sector support agencies are becoming scarcer as their resources are limited by cost-cutting.

It is thought that there will be an expectation in the future for community organisations to fulfil roles traditionally reserved for government-supported schemes.
