Drink driver remanded in custody

A SHEPHERD has been remanded in custody for a fortnight after being caught drink-driving for a third time.

Malcolm Symington, 51, lives in an isolated area near Langholm.

He was caught by the dashboard camera installed in another vehicle as he drive through the town and was reported to police.

When traced to his home at Westerkirk Mains, Symington said: "I was hungry and desperate and took a chance."

At Dumfries Sheriff Court, Symington admitted driving while banned on Glenesk Road in Langholm on August 12.

He also admitted driving a car without insurance.

Solicitor Liz Dougan said that although he was banned from the roads, Symington had been able to drive around a field and described his action as "sheer stupidity".

Sheriff Brian Mohan pointed out to Symington that he was due to be sentenced for his third drink-driving offence on August 30.

He said that he was not prepared to release him from custody prior to being sentenced.
