Drink driver jailed

LANGHOLM: A 51-year-old motorist, who drove dangerously while four times over the drink limit and while disqualified, has been jailed for seven months and banned from the road for 40 months.

Malcolm Symington, who lives in a caravan near Langholm, pleaded guilty to committing the offences last month and using a car without insurance.

He admitted at Dumfries Sheriff Court that he failed to drive off when traffic lights in the High Street turned green, reversed and continued to do so, despite the driver of another car signalling him with his horn, colliding with the car, mounting the pavement and driving along it.

Sheriff Brian Mohan refused a motion from the fiscal for the forfeiture of Symington’s £15,000 car which, it was stated, was the only financial asset he had. He had planned to sell it to pay debts.

LANGHOLM: Mr E Calcroft of 77 Caroline Street has applied for planning permission to install 11 replacement windows and two doors with UPVC doors and windows at 95 High Street.

WESTERKIRK: Motorists can expect minor delays on the B709 road at Burnfoot today. James Findlay, working for Spie, is doing reconducting works. It will also carry out work at Craigcleuch this Friday.
