The annual summer exhibition, which runs until July 21, has been hosted by various venues over the years and the prominent position of the centre is sure to attract many visitors and maybe even a few buyers.

Those attending the preview evening last Friday was welcomed by Eileann Bloomer, club president.

She thanked all the members of the Langholm and Gilnockie art clubs for letting their works be displayed, the committee members and Alex Drysdale, their tutor, for his continuing support. She also thanked Felicite Scott for organising the refreshments.

In officially opening the exhibition, Judith Johnson of the Langholm Initiative, said: "I'm really honoured to be asked. It was a lovely surprise. It's quite a special thing to be asked to do.

"There is a long history of artistic talent. I asked Dick Irving how long since the club started and he reckons it was the early 1950s if not earlier.

"To sustain it for that length of time and to such a standard is amazing and there are some examples of former members' work here.

"The other thing which struck me is the variety of styles and I had to make a note of them, not being artistic myself. It's lovely to have such a variety. You continue to do Langholm and Eskdale proud.

"I hope the club will continue for many years as new people join and continue to exhibit."
