READERS of the E&L Advertiser have been taking the paper on trips around the world but for one group of people keeping in touch with home is most important in keeping their spirits high.

Sgt Kevin Turk, left, of Langholm, shares the news with Cpl Murphy in Afghanistan

For the soldiers fighting in Helmand province in Afghanistan, receiving news from their families and friends is vital to their well-being while they live in such harsh and dangerous conditions.

Kate Turk, the manager of Langholm day centre, sent us this photo of her 38-year-old son, Kevin, who is with 2 Para, one of the regiments which has suffered heavy losses recently.

Kevin, who has been serving in the Army for 20 years, has been in Afghanistan since March and is hoping to return home next month.

Kate said: “It takes weeks for the paper to reach him but I send them all.”
