LANGHOLM audiences are in for a treat this month with the forthcoming production of one of the longest-running Off-Broadway musicals of all time, The Little Shop of Horrors.
This affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name. Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop of Horrors never fails to entertain.
Judith Johnson, who directed the Langholm pantomime last year, wanted to build on the success and community involvement Panto Pandemonium created and has been thrilled with the enthusiasm and commitment of the young cast and production team for Little Shop.
She said: “It’s a quirky and hilarious musical. Seymour, an orphan and a nerd, is taken in and given a job by Mr Mushnik, the owner of a run-down florist’s in the seedy part of town. Seymour spends his time doing menial tasks and dreaming of the shop assistant, Audrey.
“One day, just after an eclipse of the sun, Seymour discovers a strange plant. He buys it and names it Audrey II. While caring for Audrey II, Seymour discovers the plant’s rather unique appetite. The plant grows and grows, as does Seymour’s infatuation for Audrey, but who will get her first?
“The cast of talented young locals is enjoying every minute of rehearsals and their sense of fun and their outstanding talent shines through.
“We have hired a professional set, including Audrey II puppets, that will transform the stage and entertain the whole family. It’s an exciting challenge to put on a show like Little Shop and we are really looking forward to the performances.”
Little Shop of Horrors is at the Buccleuch Centre on August 21, 22 and 23. Ring 013873 81196 for tickets, £10 or £8 concessions.
