FOUR more drink drivers than last year were caught during this summer’s two-week campaign in Dumfries and Galloway, police have reported.
A total of 13 drivers were caught during the campaign compared with nine in 2007.
Incidents that were of particular concern included a 32-year-old man from the Rochdale area being stopped on the A74(M) at midday and found to be over the drink-drive limit.
He was also driving without the appropriate licence and without insurance or an MOT for his vehicle. The vehicle was seized and he was bailed to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court.
A 35-year-old man from Dumfries was stopped in the early hours of the morning in Dumfries town centre and found to be more than three times the drink-drive limit. He will appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court.
Sgt McLachlan of the road policing unit said: “The figures show that we are committed in our efforts in Dumfries and Galloway to detect those who choose to ignore the drink-drive warnings.
“Although the campaign has ended, we will continue to enforce the drink-drive legislation.
"This year we have caught 166 drink drivers and just under half of those caught were as a result of members of the public calling us or as a result of crashes.”
