Buoyant trade for prime cattle

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 42 prime cattle, 16 young bulls, 44 OTM cattle, 6,851 prime hoggs and 7,526 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, January 3.

Huge show of ewes

LAST Thursday’s primestock sale saw another huge show of 7,714 ewes and 7,063 lambs, despite the Christmas festivities, with all classes of lambs selling well and in demand. There was an increased average of 158ppk (SQQ 160ppk). A smaller show of prime cattle, because of the Christmas period, were very much sought after and selling to recent rates, topping at 231.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald.

LAST Thursday we held the Christmas show of prime cattle and prime lambs. A larger entry of show cattle was presented to the judge J Little who awarded the champion ticket to T Neill, Upper Tinwald for a Limousin heifer which later realised 280p (£1,708) to the judge.
