Top price paid for British Blue

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 66 prime cattle, 8 young bulls, 31 OTM cattle, 3,430 prime lambs and 5,390 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, July 19.

A larger show of prime cattle met a similar trade and the sale was topped at 220.5p, 218.5p and 217.5p for Limousin bullocks shown by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen. Limousin heifers sold to 214.5p from R Neill, Upper Tinwald.

Young bulls sold to a top of 215.5p for Limousin from 6 Stonehouse.

The 31 OTM cattle saw plain cows a little easier, selling to 177.5p for a Charolais from K W Coulthard & Prtns, Low Hallburn Farm.

A much larger show of 3,430 spring lambs averaged 198.7p per kilo (SQQ 199.1p), well in line with this week’s trading as more numbers come forward. More lightweight lambs required. An excellent show of 5,390 cast ewes, rams and hoggets was forward to the usual ring of buyers, with trade a couple of pounds dearer on the week. Good lean selling ewes remain in demand and were £4 to £5 sharper on the week. Mules and good-fleshed hill ewes were easily sold, with plain ewes harder to cash. Tups were short of requirements and continued to sell at high rates. THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart held the fortnightly sale of store cattle on Tuesday, July 17.

A mixed show of 95 head saw best cattle still good to sell. Top price of £930 for a British Blue heifer from R P & J A Brendon, Bidlake with Limousin bullocks to £850 for L & R Foxcroft, Hightown.

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 489 store and breeding sheep at a special sale on Tuesday, July 17.

A good company was in attendance, with store lambs meeting a strong demand.

Top of £63 for Texel from Cottage Farm; others to £60 Linton House, Suffolk to £62.50 & £61.50 Linton House, Correct Greyface Ewes to £77 Linton House who also sold store hoggs at £60.50 and cast ewes at £61 for Greyfaces.
