Texel ewe and lamb top sale at £225

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward 50 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 30 OTM cattle, 5,073 prime hoggs and 4,851 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, April 26.

A plainer show of prime cattle was forward resulting in the trade being slightly easier, although good cattle remained at recent high rates, topping at 224.5p for a brilliant Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn. Bullocks topped at 222.5p twice from Messrs Nicholson, The Gill and Messrs Sisson, Fenton.

A good show of Continental young bulls met a brisk trade, topping at 214.5p (£1,544) for a British Blue from Messrs Hemmings, Hay Lane Farm.

A smaller show of OTM cattle let to a good trade with cattle reaching 171p for a British Blue from D & Y Wilson, Plumpe Farm. More could be sold to vendors’ advantage.

A tremendous show of 4,851 cast ewes and rams was forward, with many plainer and hill type ewes on show. The whole sale would be £8 less on the week but still relatively easy to sell.

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward 1,071 head of ewes with lambs at foot at the sale on Tuesday, April 24.

A larger show attracted a full ring of buyers with all classes at extreme rates and short of requirements.

Top was £225 each for a pure Texel ewe with single tup lamb from Master Thomas Hall, Knells Farm, who also sold Bleu d’Maines with twins at £155 each.

It was a mixed show but trade remained high, rates topping at £1,050 for a Shorthorn heifer shown by J & E Goddard & Son, Gall Farm, with bullocks topping at £995 for a Limousin from Messrs J T Fleming & Son, Falnash.
