Spring lambs leap ahead

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 57 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 36 OTM cattle, 499 spring lambs, 2,521 prime hoggs and 4,054 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, May 31.

A larger show of prime cattle saw trade sharper and plenty of keen bidders. Top price was 225.5p for a smart Limousin heifer shown by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green purchased by J Little; others to 222.5p also from Messrs Taylor. Limousin bullocks sold to 223.5p again from Messrs Taylor, whose run of 12 cattle averaged 216.9p; other Limousins sold to 221.5p from J C & D Nicholson, The Gill with Messrs Nicholsons’ cattle levelling at 219.8p. Charolais bullocks sold to 221.5p from Messrs Taylor.

Young bulls met a good trade and more were needed to fill buyers’ orders. Top of 195.5p (£1,424) for Simmental from Stirches Mains. Limousins to 195.5p Harelawhole; Black & Whites 176.5p, 171.5p Harelawhole.

A better show of OTM cattle met another brisk trade and topped at 196.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Ritson, Swaites; others to 185.5p, 184.5p and 177.5p shown by Messrs T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke.

A larger show of 499 spring lambs averaged 211p per kilo, well in front of all other centres this week as abattoirs make sure they have sheep over the long bank holiday. Lambs aren’t required over 44 kilos to meet this good trade, with heavy lambs worth no extra. Top of 237p per kilo for Texels from Burncroft and to £96.80 per head for Charollais from Rottington Hall who sold others at £94.80; Suffolk £94.80 The Land, £93.80 Fenton Farm; Texel £94.80 The Wreay, £93.80 Westhills, £90.80 Burncroft; Oxford £79.80, £75.80 Guards Farm.

The 2,521 prime hoggs forward were a smaller mixed show for quality, averaging 152.6p per kilo, with well-fleshed hoggs receiving a premium and short of requirements. Lean hoggs remained hard to cash, with 50 kilo + hoggs in demand, more could be sold to advantage. The sale was topped at 184p per kilo for Texels from Lairdlaugh and to £107.50 per head for Texels from Noss Farm, £104.50 Aydon Farm, £97.50 Noss Farm; Hill Cheviot £97.50 Broomhills, £87.80 Southend and Sloda Hill, £84.80 Southend; Suffolk £93.80 Marygate, £92 Broomhills, £91.50 Riggfoot; Greyface £88.50 Red House, £75.50, £73.50 Southend; North Country Cheviot £87.80 Hyde Park, £86.50 Glenlea, £79.80 Aydon Farm; Leicester £71.50 Howburn; Blackface £68.80 Broomhills, £67.80, £65.80 Red House; Herdwick £50, £45 Stoneraise Place; Swaledale £43.80 Westernhopeburn.

A smaller show of 4,054 cast ewes and rams was forward to a larger ring of buyers, with trade remaining static on the week and smaller hill type ewes looking dearer per head than large fat ewes.

There was another excellent show of sheep and, with more buyers present, all classes met an excellent trade.
