Impressive show of prime hoggs

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 52 prime cattle, two young bulls, 26 OTM cattle, 4,507 prime hoggs and 4,804 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, April 19.

There was a smaller show of prime cattle but still plenty of quality was on offer and trade remained buoyant topping at 227.5p for a Limousin heifer from A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green purchased by J Little, Charolais to 226.5p shown by J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn. British Blue bullocks sold to 225.5p from Messrs R Neill, Upper Tinwald and 224.5p from J C & D Nicholson & Son, The Gill.

OTM trade maintained recent high rates topping at 163.5p for Charolais from Messrs Baxter, Moss Side.

After a week of dropping trade around the country, Longtown still managed an impressive show of 4,542 prime hoggs which, in line with the week’s trend, averaged 198p (210p in SQQ) with 1,474 hoggs being over 46 kilos. Best export weight hoggs and small light weight hoggs were easily sold and short of buyers’ requirements. A tremendous show of 4,804 cast ewes and rams was forward with more plainer and hill type ewes on show. The whole sale would be £4 to £5 less on the week but still achieved an overall average of £95.12.

All classes of ewes with lambs were dearer to a top of £77 each for Cheviot Mule shearlings with singles from Rabygrange, with Greyfaces with twins to £68 New Hummerbecks.
