Good entry of breeding sheep

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 50 prime cattle, two young bulls, 38 OTM cattle, 5,669 prime lambs and 6,315 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, November 10.

A good show of prime cattle forward saw averages up and a buoyant trade throughout. Topping the sale at 213.5p was a Limousin bullock shown by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen with their run of bullocks averaging 207.1p. In the heifer section top price was 212.5p twice for a Simmental and a Limousin from J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, Mr. Blaylocks heifer’s levelled at 202.3p.

There was a shortage of bulls and more are needed to take advantage of the good trade being had. Limousin to 208.5p Nunscleugh; Belgian Blues 171.5p Becton Hall. Top price per head £1428.23 for Limousin from Nunscleugh; British Blue £1183.35 Becton Hall.

In the OTM section mainly feeding cows were on offer and met a flying trade throughout with more numbers required. Top price was 147.5p for a Limousin from G McGimpsey & Co, D’Mainholm.

Lambs were a mixed show for quality, with export weights regularly selling between 190p and 210p per kilo. A large volume of lambs 45-48 kilos diluted the average but small lightweight lambs and lambs over 50kgs continued to meet a good trade. Vendors should note there is no bonus for having lambs too heavy as 43kg to 48kg fail to fit export specification.

Ewes were a similar trade on the week, with only the heavy ewes being easier on the week. All others maintained recent rates and continue to be in demand. The 102 cattle were short of numbers for the buyers’ requirements and trade was very dear throughout. Top price was £885 for Limousin bullocks from Slealands.

Store lambs were fewer and trade very firm. Top was £75 for Texels from Wanwood Hill, £74.50 Shield Hill, £71.50 Rinnion Hills and Haswellsykes. At the final sale of breeding sheep a good entry for the time of year met an exceptional trade. Top was £90, £86 for two-crop Swaledales from The Bayles. Hill Cheviots £70 Blackburn £67 Drycleughlea; Swaledales £55 Nettling Flatt who also sold Herdwicks at £44. Blackfaces £57 Bayles , £55 Nettling Flatt.
