Disaster strikes

At last, a heatwave. Isn’t it great? Look out the window and everything seems to be great.
Come to the auction last Thursday, however, and it was a completely different story – 5,600 hoggets and 4,800 ewes, twice as many of each compared with the corresponding sale last year. Disaster. I have never experienced such a bad trade for anything. The hoggs averaged a mere 152p, with ewes £5 to £10 back on the week (see report).
In line with other centres we got off lightly but the question arose, what lies in store?
Our lamb trade was better than most places but even so an average just under £2 is nothing exciting.
At our breeding and store cattle sale last week all other centres were put in the shade as a buoyant cattle trade lifted the spirits.
Please come and visit us on our stand at Scotsheep next week at Dumfries House, Cumnock.
