Big demand for store cattle

THE Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward 50 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 36 OTM cattle, 761 spring lambs, 1,894 prime hoggs and 2,944 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday, June 7.

A smaller show of prime cattle saw trade very dear and topped at 228.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green; others to 227.5p from J & N Blaylock & Sons, Hallburn. Limousin bullocks sold to 226.5p from Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green; others 221.5p from J C & D Nicholson & Son, The Gill.

Young bulls met a flying trade and proved Longtown can satisfy vendors’ expectations. Top price of 227.5p and 223.5p for British Blues shown by J Retson & Son, Gardrum. Black & Whites to 178.5p Jerriestown.

A larger and improved show of quality OTM cattle met a buoyant trade throughout, topping at 178.5p for a British Blue from T Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke, with Limousins to 173.5p from R M & P Armstrong, Slealands and Black & Whites selling to 164.5p, 163.5p from J G Vevers, Peterscrook.

A larger show of 761 spring lambs averaged 213p per kilo, well in front of national and deadweight prices. More could have been sold to advantage. Lambs do not need to be heavy in weight. A smaller show of 1,894 prime hoggs was forward with well-fleshed hoggs of all weight ranges realising an excellent trade, with plain hoggs still hard to cash. A smaller show of 2,944 cast ewes and rams was forward, with small ewes £3 up on the week and heavy ewes £8 to £10 up on the week. Lean selling ewes were short of buyers’ requirements.

Another large entry attracted plenty of buyers from a wide area. Trade was again very strong for all breeds of sheep.

Top price to £930 (x2) for Limousin bulls shown by R & G Moor, Borthwick Mains. Limousin heifers sold to £860 and Limousin bullocks to £850 both from G F Davies & Co, Teindside.
