Host of ideas to mark the bi-centenary
COUNCILLOR J E Carruthers, Charles St. New, moved for the children to get two shillings or half a crown this year; however it was thought they might expect it every year. It was too late to have a special coin struck by the Mint, so may be a special medallion. Other suggestions were a special piece of crockery, souvenir box of chocolates or biscuits.IT WAS suggested that a special joint meet be run under the joint auspices of the Border Hound Trailing Association and the Hound Trailing Association. This was agreed to at the May meeting, with the prize money to remain at £30, however by June the Common Riding committee had received a letter from the HTA, stating that under their existing rules they could not allow a joint trail to be run. HE WOULD present a silver cup, to be won outright, to either the Spurs or the Mercury stakes for the bi-centenery. It was presented to Andy Morgan, who received a great reception from the crowd when he piloted Fandango to victory in the Westerhall Plate, and then later in the afternoon, he was first past the post in the Mercury Stakes.IN MID-JULY the E&L published an article on whether a new cairn should be erected to celebrate the bi-centenary, as discussed by the Common Riding committee. THE secretary had written a letter to the BBC, with the view of having Langholm Common Riding proceedings made a feature of their programme.

Vast crowds for the 200th anniversary
BACK to the town for a hurried breakfast, the Flute Band, as it had awakened the lieges earlier in the morning, leading the way to the tune of Bonnie Chairlie.MOST of the crowd went to the Townfoot in readiness to accompany the emblems – Banna, Crown and Thistle – up to Mount Hooley, but others made their way to the Kirk Wynd to see the bairns.A RECORD crowd was present on the Castleholm in the afternoon, and it was acknowledged by all that the sports programme was easily the best seen at a Common Riding for many years.
