THE Flute Band provided the customary reveille for the townspeople on the Common Riding morning and promptly at five o’clock they paraded through the principal streets of the town, and then followed the long trek up Copshaw Road to the Hound Trail.

Blowing away the cobwebs
THE morning dawned fair, giving every promise of a beautiful day. At 5 a.m. the notes of the Flute Band and its echoing drums soon had the inhabitants of the town awake and away for the hound trail.

AN INCIDENT in the early morning part of the day’s proceedings was the arrest of four bookmakers belonging to Carlisle who were plying their trade in connection with the hound trail.

Crown Hotel’s final year for flag
DAVID Irving was the last Cornet to have the flag presented from the Crown Hotel and a cavalcade of 54 supported him.

Flags all over the town on the most important day of the year
THE Common Riding Committee have endorsed the very excellent suggestion that those who have flags in their possession from the Diamond Jubilee celebrations should use them for the decoration of the town on this the most important day of the Langholm year.

First Englishman of English stock to be elected as Cornet
BREAKING with tradition, the people of Langholm overwhelmingly elected an Englishman as Cornet in 1997. Simon P Wood, 31, had lived in Langholm for only nine years.

An evening of dancing on the Castleholm

First Cornet
IT was in 1817 that it was decided to select a leader, or Cornet, as he is now called, who would lead the horsemen round the boundaries and act as Master of Ceremonies on the Common Riding Day.

IT WAS an overcast but far from a dull day at the Castle Craigs ride-out as Cornet Andrew Johnstone set off from the Kilngreen with his right and left-hand men Kevan Grieve and James Ritchie, along with 111 mounted followers.
