If Bill Harkness’s year as Cornet is anything to go by, tomorrow’s weather is going to be the best of the summer. In 1962 the weather leading up to the day was ‘atrocious’ for a month but the last Friday in July was ‘clear and warm’ and ‘King Sol smiled on the town’.
Bill, who now lives in Symington, Ayrshire, with his wife, Alexa, was 24 when he was elected Cornet while he was working at Arthur Bell’s mill where he started the day after leaving school. He also worked at Robert Todd’s in Carlisle.
