THE cavalcade of 102 horses, led by Cornet Graeme Murray and his right and left-hand men Derek Hogg and Simon Richardson, were cheered loudly as they made the thrilling gallop up the steep slope of the Kirk Wynd on their way to the Castle Craigs.
Among the cavalcade were semi-jubilee Cornet Kenneth Donaldson and the Cornet’s father John Murray.
Six ponies had been judged at the Kilngreen by Neil Irving and Stuart Hogg and the Alfie Bell memorial trophy was presented by the Cornet to Callum Henderson at the club dinner that evening in the Crown Hotel.
The Ian McMillan cup for the best new juvenile member was presented to Findlay Eagleson.
Both received switches from the Castle Craigs committee and equestrian books from Neil Henderson.
On returning to the town the riders were met by the Langholm pipe band which led them round the streets.
At the club dinner Castle Craigs president David McVittie congratulated Cornet Murray on the lead he had given during the ride-out. There followed speeches and songs and some of the town band members played a selection of Common Riding tunes.
The toast to the Cornet was given by Wayne Irving, to which Cornet Murray replied. Colin Irving toasted the semi-jubilee Cornet and Kenneth Donaldson made suitable reply. The toast to the seven new members, who received their badges, was proposed by Walter Hislop.
The president closed the proceedings with a vote of thanks to the landowners, speakers and entertainers and the Crown staff for the meal.
