Happy Common Riding from the E&L

THE reporting by the Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser of the Common Riding has changed greatly over the years.

Today’s newspaper provides readers with a 16-page supplement to help make the day a memorable occasion for everyone, locals and visitors.

The supplement covers the events from 150, 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago as well as profiles of the Jubilee Cornet, the late Ian Murray, and semi-Jubilee Cornet Roger Maxwell.

The 2007 Cornet Andrew Johnstone tells us what it means to him to carry the flag on the last Friday in July and the responsibility that entails.

There are dozens of photos to bring back memories of Common Ridings past, including a unique event in 1947 and the story behind the chain of office.

We look at some of the famous names who have taken part in the games on the Castleholm and how the monument came to be built.

We hope you enjoy reading the reports and that the photos will bring back many happy memories.

The E&L would like to send its best wishes to Cornet Andrew Johnstone for a great day tomorrow.

We would also like to thank many people for their help in compiling this supplement. They include Betty Little, Dorothy Hyslop,Billy Young, Jimmy Maxwell, Dick Hill, Elliot Borthwick, Les Murray, Rita Murray, Kathleen Beattie, Roger Maxwell, Jock Scott, David Irving, Andrew Johnstone, Gavin Fox, Bunty Elliot, Langholm archive group and everyone we have pestered for information.
