CHARLES Stewart Paisley, the 1935 Cornet, came from a well-known business family in the town and he still has relatives living here today, including his sister-in-law, Rosie Paisley, who is now 90.
He was the son of Tom Paisley and lived at The Holm. He later became the proprietor of the skinyards business in Elizabeth Street and when it was sold in 1964, he stayed on as a director.
When he was elected Cornet he won with one of the narrowest majorities. He received 299 votes, while his only opponent Hounam was a mere seven votes behind.
In the second world war he joined the Royal Navy and served on minesweepers. He met his future wife, Eleanor Ivinson, in 1940. She came from Cumrew near Carlisle but moved to Langholm to work as a nurse in the Thomas Hope Hospital. Charles died in 1971 and Eleanor died in 2001.
The couple lived at Thisbe in Rosevale Gardens and had two daughters, Elizabeth and Jane. Elizabeth and her husband, Robin Raine, live in Kirkoswald near Penrith and have two sons and seven grandchildren.
Jane and her husband David Kyle live near Perth in Australia and have three children and two grandchildren.
Jane, who still has her father’s sash and spurs, and her family are currently staying with Elizabeth and they are planning to be in Langholm tomorrow.
