A good turnout at rainy Craig ride-out

RAIN fell continuously for the Craig ride-out last Sunday but Cornet Graeme Murray was still smiling as he and his right and left-hand men Derek Hogg and Simon Richardson set off from the Kilngreen with 37 mounted followers.

The riders went by way of Jimmy’s Brae and on to the Meikleholm and Timpen before heading towards the Craig where a good crowd welcomed them, despite the dismal weather.

The Cornet’s parents John and Linda Murray judged the ponies and riders at the Kilngreen.

The James Harkness trophy for best-turned-out horse or pony ridden by a girl studying at Langholm Academy was won by Abbie Johnstone.

The Craig cup for best-turned-out pony of 14.2hh and under went to Nicole Beattie.

Both winners received their trophies from the Cornet and switches were given by the Castle Craigs Club committee.

Refreshments were served by the Castle Craigs helpers and president David McVittie thanked the landowners, the Duke of Buccleuch and Neil Ewart.

The riders headed back by Craig Hill, Timpen and Meikleholm.
